Terrorism/Violent Extremism

There has been a lot of talk about terrorists and violent extremism in the news but what does it mean and why is everyone talking about it now?

What is violent extremism?

Violent extremism, or terrorism, is when individuals or groups of people carry out acts of murder and violence against innocent people and say that it is in the name of a cause, a religion or a belief.

Why is everyone talking about it now?

There have been a number of significant terrorist attacks over the last ten years which have been carried out by individuals or groups who have used the name of the peaceful religion of Islam to justify their actions.

Who is involved?

It is very important to note that there is no single group of people who are responsible for terrorism and that only a very small minority of people ever get involved in terrorism in the first place.

Should I be frightened?

No. The numbers of people involved in terrorism are very small and the Government and other agencies such as the police are working hard to catch the people involved and also to stop other people getting involved in the first place.

What should I do if I see or hear something suspicious?

You should contact the Police on 999 or speak to someone you trust like a parent, teacher or lecturer and let them know what you have seen or heard.

You can contact the Police anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on Tel: 0800 555 111 or by using their secure on-line form
