Most people think that burglary is just when someone breaks into a building and steals something but it is more complex than that.

Burglary is where a person enters a building they have not got permission to enter and either:

  • Steals something
  • Seriously injures someone, or
  • Damages something

An Aggravated Burglary is a burglary where the burglar carries with them any

  • Offensive weapon
  • Imitation firearm (gun)
  • Real firearm, or
  • Explosive

Burglary is a very serious offence. The maximum penalty for burglary is 14 years in prison but for an aggravated burglary it is life in prison.

What can you do to prevent a potential Burglar?

Think of all the types of gadgets you have in your house. Do you have a mobile phone? A flat screen TV? An iPod? A computer? A Wii or PlayStation? It's likely you and your family own one or more of these gadgets and that equates to potentially £1000's.

Here are some simple things you and your family can do to help make your home safer:

  • Lock windows and doors when you go out even if you're just popping to the shop.
  • Make it look like you're home when you're not by using timer switches or leaving the lights or radio on.
  • Don't tempt a burglar, keep all your valuables out of sight, especially when you're not at home.
  • Register your valuables with Immobilise (http://www.immobilise.com/).
  • Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under a door mat or in a flower pot - a burglar will look there first!
  • Put away and/or lock up all bikes, skateboards and mini scooters.
  • Remember to remove keys from locked windows and to keep them out of sight in a safe place.
  • Got a gate between the front and back of your house? Make sure it's securely locked day & night?

Distraction Burglary

Distraction burglary is a burglary where the burglar, instead of breaking into the building, tells lies to the occupant to get inside and then takes the chance to steal items of value.

This is a particularly mean offence and leaves the victim feeling frightened and vulnerable. Often old people are the target and it can make life miserable for them.
