The Police Authority
Avon and Somerset Police Authority is an independent body made up of local people.
We have 17 Members:
- 9 local Councillors appointed by the local councils in the area
- 8 Independent Members appointed by the Police Authority – one who must be a Magistrate
Our job is to consult with local people to:
- Find out what they want from their local police
- Decide how much council tax should be raised for the local police budget
- Set local policing priorities and targets for performance for the Constabulary
- Monitor what the police do and how they perform against the targets set
- Publish a plan which tells people what they can expect from their police service and report back at the end of the year.
The Police Authority has a duty under the Children’s Act 2004 to safeguard and promote the wellbeing of children and young people. Find out more about what we are doing...
We are also responsible for:
- Appointing (and dismissing) the Chief Constable and senior police officers
- Overseeing complaints against the police and dealing with complaints and discipline relating to senior officers
- Running the Independent Custody Visiting Scheme which ensures custody facilities are adequate and that people in custody are treated fairly
