Essential Guide to Street Safety
Don't go Solo
- Stick with your friends, there's safety in numbers.
- Even as a group, don't get into the car of a total stranger.
- Keep some cash for the journey home.
- Inform family and friends where you are going and when you will be back.
- Remember your mobile, make sure it's fully charged and has credit to make a couple of calls.
Beware of strangers
- Don't take lifts from strangers.
- If an offer made to you sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Don't be bullied into doing things you know are wrong and dangerous.
- Stay away from trouble – keep clear of volatile situations and don't get involved. You cannot reason with a very drunk person.
- Don't leave drunken mates by themselves.
Stash your cash and valuables
- Don't flash them around.
- Be aware of who is around when you go to the cashpoint – protect your PIN number.
- Hide your wallet and mobile and only carry the cash and cards you need for the night.
- Don't leave valuables unattended.
- Beware of card skimming devices attached to cashpoints. If in doubt, don't use it – find another.
It's a tempting short-cut but...
- Don't be tempted by dark alleys or quiet streets especially at night.
- Plan your route carefully.
- Look confident and in control – appearing lost or vague about your surroundings gives off the wrong signals to criminals on the look out for easy prey.
- Keep with friends and carry a personal attack alarm.
If in doubt - call 999
- If you suspect trouble, or think you see someone else in trouble, dial 999 ASAP.
