Internet safety
Many of us use the internet on a daily basis at school and work, to do homework, to shop, to download music or just to chat with our friends.
Most of the time you are safe but it's really important to understand the dangers that can exist on-line and how to deal with them should they occur.
- Remain as anonymous as possible. Don't give any private details to anyone; this includes your name, address, phone number, email address, pictures or passwords. If someone does ask for personal details be aware that they may not be genuine.
- Be careful who you trust online, it's easy for people to pretend to be something they're not when you can't see or talk to the actual person.
- If you want to meet a new on-line friend you should NEVER go without an adult.
- Check that your profiles on sites don't contain personal information. Remember anyone can view your details on sites. It's a good idea to only have friends on these sites that you are friends with in real life.
- If you feel uncomfortable in a chatroom discussion, log out straight away and report it to a parent or adult. You can also change your screen name which will make it easier to stay anonymous.
- Use a nickname in chatrooms that will make you identifiable only to your friends; this will make it more difficult for people to track you down via your screen name and email.
- If you don't want to receive or see messages from a particular person you can block/ignore them. Learn how to by visiting the Chat Danger website.
- If you are unhappy with something/someone in your chatroom, make sure you know how to report them to the chatroom provider – you should be able to find contact details via the help tab in the chatroom.
