Keeping safe around electricity

NEVER try to get things out of substations. Electricity can jump gaps and kill you if you get too close.

NEVER climb up pylons or poles carrying overhead wires. Electricity can jump gaps and kill you. You could also fall and hurt yourself.

IF YOUR KITE IS ABOUT TO TOUCH OVERHEAD WIRES LET GO. If it gets stuck leave it and call the electricity company. If the string is hanging down call the police. Don't touch it because electricity can travel along the string.

NEVER pitch your tent near overhead wires.

NEVER fish near overhead wires. Take your rod apart before moving from one place to another.

NEVER mess with vandalised street lights. Bare wires inside could kill you.

NEVER interfere with or damage electrical equipment. You could injure yourself and put others at risk if you cause a power cut. And its illegal!

KEEP AWAY FROM OVERHEAD WIRES. Alert anyone in danger of touching overhead wires.

What should you do if something goes wrong:

To get something out of a substation:

  • Never go inside a substation to get out anything that's lost.
  • Telephone the local electricity company to get it back for you.
  • Use the number displayed on the substation – or look it up under 'E' for electricity in the phone book.
  • Tell them where the substation is and what you have lost. They will try and get it back for you.
  • Remember – you won't get into trouble for telling people about a problem.

If someone's life is in danger:

  • If someone is injured ring 999 and call an ambulance and the police.

If someone is in contact with live electricity:

  • Do not touch them.
  • Contact the police or the local electricity company to get the power switched off.

Do not ignore 'Danger of Death' signs:

  • They are there to warn you that electricity is dangerous close up. Electricity is safe unless you mess about with it. If you break into substations or get too close to electrical equipment, it will kill you!
