Mopeds
A moped has an engine no bigger than 50cc and will only be able to travel at a maximum of 50 km/h (approximately 31 mph).
- You can ride a moped at 16 on a provisional motorcycle licence with moped entitlement.
- You must complete CBT (compulsory basic training), the theory test and the practical moped test to get a full moped licence.
- If you have a full car licence you still have to complete CBT before riding a moped.
Moped exhausts
- Many moped exhaust systems contain restrictors to keep the speed below 30mph. If those restrictors are removed to make the bike go faster, it will no longer be classified as a moped, and the driving licence and insurance will be invalid.
- At 17 you can legally remove these restrictions, provided you check your licence covers them, tell your insurance company and pay the extra premiums! After these changes the bike will be classed as a motorcycle.
- The police can use a dynamometer to check the power output and speed of mopeds if they think it's been tampered with.
Tyres
The law requires that the tread pattern for mopeds is visible but gives no depth measurement. Remember - the less tread you have the less grip you have on a wet road!
