Window tinting

Windscreens must allow 75% light through the front window and 70% through the side.

Novelty lights

It is an offence to replace the standard lights on your vehicle with coloured, novelty lights.

  • Small coloured lights that do not flash are not illegal but please think about their effect on other drivers particularly if they are blue.
  • Lights on your wipers are illegal because they move.
  • Red lights should only be visible from the rear.
  • White lights (with the exception of your reversing light) should only be visible from the front.
  • The amber, indicator lights should be visible from both front and back.

Our advice is that it's better to be safe than sorry and not to have any coloured, novelty lights on your vehicle... after all, you don't want to attract the attention of the police do you?

If you would like to ask a specific question about your lights please submit your question through our feedback form.

Number Plates

Italic number plates or other non-standard fonts are not allowed. If you fit them to your vehicle you risk a £30 fixed penalty ticket every time you’re stopped by the police.

Reflective tape fitted to number plates doesn't work! The number plate image can be altered electronically and then read. Don't waste your money!
