Learning to drive

Before you can learn to drive you have to apply for a provisional licence. You can do this on-line by visiting the DVLA website or by filling in a D1 form from your local post office or direct from the DVLA.

Apply for a provisional driving licence on-line

• You have to be 17 years old to learn to drive.
• You can, however, apply for your provisional licence two months before your 17th birthday.
• As a learner driver you must be accompanied by a supervisor at all times.
• You must display L plates to the front and rear of the vehicle.
• Your supervisor must be at least 21 and have held a full and valid licence for at least three years.

Probationary period

When you pass your test you start a "probationary" period, which lasts for two years. If you accumulate 6 points or more during this period you will lose your licence and have to apply for a new provisional licence... and you will have to re-take your theory and practical tests!!!
