Bikes

Do you know your bike?

If the worst was to happen and your bike got nabbed would you be able to give the police enough information to get it back?

Hopefully no-one will ever rob your ride but if they do it would be a bonus if you kept good records.

Why not download, complete and keep the 'Know Your Bike' leaflet*? Then, if someone does walk off with your wheels you'll stand a much better chance of getting it back.

Sergeant Elaine Linham, from Bridgwater Police Station says "We recover many bikes but, sadly, cannot return them due to insuffient information."

  • Your bike should be safe for the road with efficient brakes and lights.
  • Being seen is an absolute priority; make sure you wear fluorescent clothes in the daytime and reflective clothes at night.
  • You can use flashing front and rear lights on your bike.
  • As a bike rider you should comply with all the traffic laws, eg stop signs and traffic lights.
  • You can keep your bike secure by securing it to a bicycle stand or a piece of robust street furniture (like a lamp post), using a decent lock.
  • You can also register your bike on the Bike Register or Immobilise. These registers help to reduce bicycle theft and assist in recovering your bike if it is stolen.
