Immigration
The UK is a country of migrants.
The original Stone Age inhabitants of these islands have given way to waves of migration and conquest from peoples such as the Celts, Picts, Scots, Angles, Romans, Saxons and Normans, each adding some of their character to this diverse country.
This process has continued to the present day with migration from the UK's former colonial empire bringing in migrants from the Indian Sub Continent and the Caribbean in particular.
Recent extension of the membership of the European Union has also brought in migrants from Eastern Europe, in particular Poland, who have come here to work.
