Asylum seekers
You have probably heard about asylum seekers or maybe you have come to the UK seeking asylum because of things that have happened to you and your family in another country.
Asylum seekers are people who wish to claim asylum in the UK where they will be safe.
After the Second World War, the UK became part of an international arrangement whereby people seeking asylum would be allowed to stay and to be given access to services like health and housing while their case was being considered. Although they are not allowed to work until asylum status has been granted many use their time to attend college and improve their English, or do voluntary work.
Many other countries around the world also accept people seeking asylum.
If an asylum seeker is granted refugee status they are then allowed to remain in the UK and work.
An illegal immigrant is someone who enters or lives in the UK without permission. Their situation is precarious and they can be exploited by criminals.
